Try This Instead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019ve turned on the TV or listened to the radio in the past week or two, you\u2019ve probably heard a lot about them.\u00a0New Year\u2019s Resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>At this time of year, many us are determined to change something about our lives for the better \u2013 to part ways with what didn\u2019t serve us last year and to go after what we really want in our lives in the future.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve never been one to make New Year\u2019s Resolutions, which might seem a bit strange coming from a health coach, someone whose goal is to help other people make changes to improve their health and well-being.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is that most people who make resolutions don\u2019t stick with them. We see this at gyms when people sign up for memberships (with the best of intentions!) in January, only to fall off the wagon by April.<\/p>\n<p>In fact,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.statisticbrain.com\/new-years-resolution-statistics\/\">nearly half of Americans usually make New Year\u2019s Resolutions<\/a>. Yet a mere\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.statisticbrain.com\/new-years-resolution-statistics\/\">8% of us are successful at keeping them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Something isn\u2019t working.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that we don\u2019t want to change, grow or improve. It\u2019s that we\u2019re focusing on the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently \u201cBecause it\u2019s January\u201d isn\u2019t enough of a long-term motivator to help us stick to our goals and intentions.<\/p>\n<p>We need to start asking WHY. What\u2019s the driver for why we want to change? WHY do we want to change in that way?<\/p>\n<p>This year, I took a different approach to New Year\u2019s Resolutions based on what I\u2019ve learned from Danielle LaPorte, a feisty entrepreneur, author, motivational speaker, and blogger.<\/p>\n<p>In the beginning of her book, The Desire Map, she writes about this very time of year and the act of setting resolutions and has found that most of her resolutions ended up as uninspired to do lists rather than motivational goals.<\/p>\n<p>So, as someone known for bucking convention, she did something different.<br \/>\nInstead of focusing on what she wanted to DO that year, she asked herself a different question.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I want to feel?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once we get clear on WHY we want to make changes and HOW we want to feel, we can hone in on what will really help us get there.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what happens.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of setting a goal of, \u201cI want to lose weight,\u201d we can look at that and ask what that\u2019s all about. What does losing weight make us\u00a0<em>feel\u00a0<\/em>like?<\/p>\n<p><em>Free?<br \/>\nPeaceful?<br \/>\nWorthy?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When we get clear on what we want to feel, we can be more intentional about setting goals. In her book, Danielle outlines an exercise to arrive at what she calls Core Desired Feelings \u2013 the way we want to feel to make real, meaningful change happen in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>My husband and I went to breakfast on New Year\u2019s Day to do some reflecting and planning and each arrived at our Core Desired Feelings.<\/p>\n<p>His?\u00a0<strong>Motivated. Energized. Accomplished.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All reasons he has recently started training for triathlons and has his eyes set on an Ironman triathlon alongside my 65-year-old father in 2016. Knowing how he wants to feel pushes him to keep moving in the face of resistance or barriers.<\/p>\n<p>Mine?\u00a0<strong>Radiant. Clarity. Flowing. Connected. Worthy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the past few years, as I\u2019ve pursued my Master\u2019s degree and several nutrition certifications and pushed myself in my career, I\u2019ve felt overwhelmed and unfocused at times. At times, I\u2019ve felt that I should keep it down or not talk about something for fear people would be \u201cturned off\u201d by what I have to say.<\/p>\n<p>I did a visualization exercise a month or so ago and imagined my \u201cideal day\u201d \u2013 what it felt like, what it looked like, how I would spend it. In that exercise, I pictured lots of physical openness and light in the spaces around me.<\/p>\n<p>Not only do I want to bring light into my physical space, but I also want to be someone who has a glow and sense of joy about me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To be radiant is to be unapologetically bright, bold, and intentional.\u00a0<\/strong>When something is radiant, it overflows with light that can\u2019t help but spread. This year, I\u2019m going to \u201cgo for it,\u201d put myself out there, and be me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I generate feelings of radiance?<br \/>\n<\/strong>By spending time with other people who are on fire about what they do and are passionate about making the world a better place. By being \u201cin the zone\u201d or experiencing \u201cflow\u201d by doing what I love most \u2013 teaching, presenting, cooking, and writing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, how about you?
