{"id":2044,"date":"2014-06-30T21:18:20","date_gmt":"2014-06-30T21:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/c1mdevsite.com\/navacenter.com\/?p=2044"},"modified":"2020-10-19T21:18:49","modified_gmt":"2020-10-19T21:18:49","slug":"july-summer-of-wellness-challenge-adopt-2-healthy-habits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/c1mdevsite.com\/navacenter.com\/july-summer-of-wellness-challenge-adopt-2-healthy-habits\/","title":{"rendered":"July Summer of Wellness Challenge: Adopt 2 Healthy Habits"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>We are continually inspired by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.navacenter.com\/services\/membership\">Nava Medical Director, Douglas Lord, M.D.<\/a>\u00a0From his motivational approach to dealing with life\u2019s little challenges, to his \u201c<em>I practice what I preach<\/em>\u201d approach to health; Dr. Lord is a perfect example of what a healthy lifestyle can do for you.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We admire Dr. Lord so much here at Nava, we decided that we would dedicate month two of the \u201cSummer of Wellness Challenge,\u201d to celebrating some of his favorite healthy habits.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Your challenge for July, if you choose to accept it, is to adopt two healthy habits for the entire month.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course our goal is for you to adopt these healthy habits for the long-term, but let\u2019s begin with July.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>We asked Dr. Lord to provide us with his top 9 healthy habits. We figure there must be at least one or two healthy habits you have not tried, featured on this list!<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Be sure to let us know below in the comments what two habits you plan to try for July!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brittany, Stacey and I will be representing Nava in this month\u2019s challenge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>9 of Dr. Lord\u2019s Favorite Healthy Habits<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>1.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\u00a0<\/span>Get Moving Each Day: Most of us know that daily exercise is the very best way to invest in your total wellness. Exercise can improve everything from your mood to your blood pressure. One easy way to stay motivated is to use a fitness tracker. Many of us here at Nava use the fitbit to track our 10,000 steps a day goal.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lord advises that you never let exercise become a chore. Hit the links, learn Zumba or tackle that rock climbing wall. The more fun you are having, the less it feels like exercise!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>2.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\u00a0<\/span>Get on a Sleep Schedule: Go to bed and wake up around the same time most days of the week. Sleep has a much larger impact on our overall health than most people realize. The number one thing to do to get more sleep is to regulate your sleep schedule. Consistency is key. For this month\u2019s challenge, see if you can find a one hour window for your bedtime and wake time, which you can adhere to most days of the week. Not only will you improve the quality of your sleep, but you will give your body the chance it needs to heal cells and regulate body function.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>3.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\u00a0<\/span>Increase portions of fruit &amp; veggies at every meal: Add three more servings of fruit and vegetables to your diet each day. Here is another healthy habit that is much talked about, easy to do, yet so many of us are not doing it. Just adjust your portions at each meal and you can easily achieve this health habit. We really like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/436145545136415348\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this pin\u00a0<\/a>to help eyeball portions sizes at mealtimes.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lord chooses to pack a healthy lunch most days. You rarely see Dr. Lord without some leafy greens and fresh fruit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>4.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\u00a0<\/span>Strengthen social ties: Make time for quality social interaction each day. These social connections boost brain function and stabilize blood pressure. Shocking fact; loneliness is actually a greater risk for morbidity than cigarette smoking. Socializing reduces loneliness and isolation, both factors that can accelerate aging, increase blood pressure and create anxiety.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/greatergood.berkeley.edu\/article\/item\/how_social_connections_keep_seniors_healthy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read more!\u00a0<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>5.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\u00a0<\/span>Cut down on sugar: Everyone now understands that sugar is just not good for you. For this month\u2019s challenge, we want to challenge you to \u201cQuit soda for good.\u201d We are very motivated to help all of you break the soda cycle. Diet soda fans, this includes you! Artificial sweeteners\u00a0are not doing your health any favor.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lord has serious concerns about the use of artificial sweeteners and the long-term effects. Best to just\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food\/healthy-eating-tips\/how-bad-soda-really\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kick soda to the curb<\/a>\u00a0once and for all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>6.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\u00a0<\/span>Learn how to manage stress. Dial down the cortisone and you could save yourself a lot of heartache, literally! Researchers are currently studying the effects of stress management on heart disease. The correlations are strong and mitigating the effects of stress is hot topic these days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Dr. Lord has a saying, \u201cDon\u2019t worry about things you don\u2019t have control over!\u201d Dr. Lord is absolutely correct.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkpeople.com\/resource\/wellness_articles.asp?id=185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">We like this article<\/a>\u00a0which provides a few easy stress busters!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>7.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\u00a0<\/span>Invest in a quality supplement: Many common issues like; fatigue, insomnia and even skin conditions can be attributed to nutrient and mineral deficiencies. In a perfect world, we would get everything we need for optimum body function through diet alone. Unfortunately today\u2019s processed diets leave us nutrient deficient. Reducing meat consumption is good for your total health. Some of the many benefits include; weight-loss, improved cholesterol, reduced blood sugar levels and better skin.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lord actually grew up as a vegetarian! He continues to make vegetables the star of his diet, indulging in fish, shellfish and lean meats less frequently.<\/p>\n<p>We are really excited to share some of Dr. Lord&#8217;s healthy lifestyle tips with all of you.
