Read on to find out how the story of \u201cBudget Betty\u201d and \u201cSpeedy Steve\u201d illustrates a very simple, but important, part of learning to be an educated exhibitor. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBudget Betty\u201d and \u201cSpeedy Steve\u201d don\u2019t even know each other.\u00a0 But both have one thing in common&#8212; exhibiting at the exact same show in just a few weeks. They will soon meet and be tradeshow neighbors. Betty will exhibit in Booth 100 and Steve in Booth 102. Sounds like a romance story huh? Well not this time, but it will be a good lesson in exhibiting for sure!<\/p>\n<p><img alt='' src=\"https:\/\/c1mdevsite.com\/theexpogroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/3a8b04bd-0785-4358-90f2-59fdbaeb2082.jpg\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:5px; float:right; height:253px; margin:5px; width:200px\" data-entity-uuid=\"d07a24a1-0d25-421e-ba31-7d064bf08266\" data-entity-type=\"file\">Busy preparing for the tradeshow event, <strong>Betty<\/strong> carefully plans to send:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 an assortment of 3 different boxes<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 2 plastic bins<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 1 long tube to protect a beautiful poster graphic<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Betty\u2019s total weight of materials is 400lbs.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 1000 miles across the country, <u>Steve<\/u> is sending:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\">\u2022 4 cartons<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\">\u2022 1 fiber case containing his pop up booth<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\">\u2022 1 medium sized metal container<\/p>\n<p><strong>And wouldn\u2019t you know it\u2026Steve\u2019s total weight of materials is 400lbs as well.<\/strong> (Didn\u2019t this just work out so well for this story?)<\/p>\n<p><img alt='' src=\"https:\/\/c1mdevsite.com\/theexpogroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/3248ddfa-d47a-4d76-8c5e-afd1fdf024a7.jpg\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:5px; float:left; height:208px; margin:5px; width:220px\" data-entity-uuid=\"5821af1c-2abb-4f9d-8ff4-7e4a13070c39\" data-entity-type=\"file\">Being the \u201cSpeedy Steve\u201d he is, Steve rushes ahead and sends his one fiber case on a Tuesday. Two days later he ships out four separate cartons because they are cluttering his office and he wants them out of the way. Finally, Steve decides to have his assistant send the final items for his booth later that next week. Steve thinks to himself, \u201cIt\u2019s all going to the same place anyway right?\u201d So off goes Steve\u2019s 400 lbs of booth properties&#8212;but in various stages and pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, living up to her name, \u201cBudget Betty\u201d strategically gathers all the items necessary for her booth. She then calls a transportation carrier that can assist her in stacking all her items neatly on a pallet. All the items are then wrapped tightly with shrink wrap and consolidated in one shipment. Off goes Betty\u2019s 400 lbs to the show.<\/p>\n<p>Flash forward a couple of weeks to the show. Both Steve and Betty get their final invoices. Why is Betty\u2019s material handling\/drayage fee one amount and Steve\u2019s is another?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><em><u>Betty\u2019s Invoice<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><em>The Show Material Handling Fees are $75 per cwt* (but based on 200lb minimum per shipment)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><em>Total Weight since she consolidated her shipment all in one is 400lbs. This is the equivalent of 4.0cwt<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><strong><em>4.0 x $75 = $300 Total<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><strong>*cwt is short for centum weight or hundred weight. In our example, $75 per every 100 pounds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><em><u>Steve\u2019s Invoice<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><em>Remember, The Show Material Handling Fee are $75 per cwt (but based on 200lb minimum per shipment)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><em>Steve\u2019s first piece arrives at 150 lbs. (but remember\u2026there is a 200lb minimum per shipment)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><em>2.0cwt x $75 = $150<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><em>Steve\u2019s second piece arrives days later weighing 150lbs. (but remember\u2026there is a 200lb minimum per shipment)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><em>2.0cwt x $75 = $150<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><em>Finally, remember that metal container that Steve had his assistant send out just before the show? It arrives at 100lbs. (but remember\u2026there is a 200lb minimum per shipment)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><em>2.0cwt x $75 = $150<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px\"><strong>Total Invoice: $450<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not the happiest of endings for Speedy Steve right? Two people, same weight to a show, with two different invoice totals. Learn to become an educated exhibitor.
