At the recent TSNN Awards in Louisville, Kentucky,&nbsp;personal and business branding expert Carrie Lannon shared her insights to&nbsp;help individuals and businesses determine their optimal brand identity to attract the opportunities that they desire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find that clients are often so close to their own work that they need an outside perspective to determine if their branding, which includes messaging and image, are working to their best advantage,\u201d says Carrie. &nbsp;\u201cThis is especially true of any person or business that wants to change. Why would you take the time to create and adhere to a personal brand? What are the benefits, the payoff that you are seeking?<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:\nnormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Determine the role that you want to create a personal brand for, such as team leader, sales manager, CEO, etc.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> Choose 4 attributes (adjectives that describe you) that represent who you are and what you offer.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It may be easier to select <span style=\"mso-no-proof:yes\">eight<\/span> attributes to start and narrow down from there.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>You might benefit from including an attribute that you are aiming for but have not yet achieved \u2013 one that you believe would support your \u201cwhy.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><strong>Step 4:<\/strong> Your <span style=\"mso-no-proof:yes\">four<\/span> attributes + your role = your <span style=\"mso-no-proof:yes\">personal<\/span> brand statement<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">Personal Brand Statement Example<o:p><\/o:p><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">Why:<\/b> I want to gain the level of respect and credibility that will lead to increased sales.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">Role:<\/b> sales director<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">Attributes:<\/b> determined, bold, confident and creative<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">Personal Brand Statement:<\/b> I am a determined, bold, confident and creative sales director.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">ACTIVATING YOUR <span style=\"mso-no-proof:\nyes\">PERSONAL<\/span> BRAND<o:p><\/o:p><\/b><\/h4>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">You activate your <span style=\"mso-no-proof:yes\">personal<\/span> brand by aligning 1) your communications 2) marketing materials 3) digital presence and 4) personal presence.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">COMMUNICATIONS<o:p><\/o:p><\/b><\/h4>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">You communicate your brand through your communication style.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><u>Verbal Communications<o:p><\/o:p><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">Verbal communications include your choice of 1) language 2) tone of voice, which includes <span style=\"mso-no-proof:yes\">pace<\/span> and pausing.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><u>Written Communications<o:p><\/o:p><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">Remember that written communications can be permanent and circulated to a wide audience.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Take care to align with your <span style=\"mso-no-proof:yes\">personal<\/span> brand when you write to anyone.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><u>Meaningful socializing<\/u> (also called networking!)<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">View social situations as opportunities to express your <span style=\"mso-no-proof:\nyes\">personal<\/span> brand. Make<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\"> connecting<\/b> your goal, not just finding people who can help you. Connect with everyone \u2013 you never know who knows who. <o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">Have an elevator speech ready for social situations.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Do NOT just say I am so-and-so and I work at so-and-so. Be original!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>One formula that you can use is:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I (what you do) so that (benefit). I am (what + where).<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">Elevator Speech Example<o:p><\/o:p><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">I create environments so that people feel comfortable as they transition to a new lifestyle. It can include a mark\/symbol\/logo that represents you or your business. These materials are your visual identity. ALWAYS have a business card, even if you are between jobs.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">DIGITAL PRESENCE<o:p><\/o:p><\/b><\/h4>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">90% of first impressions now happen <span style=\"mso-no-proof:yes\">online<\/span>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Be VERY AWARE of how you are represented digitally, by yourself and others. Your digital presence should do at least one or more of these: 1) inform 2) entertain 3) educate or 4) engage.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">Part of digital presence is your head shot. Be sure it represents you as a professional authority. Consider if someone saw a photo of you or met you, would you match your <span style=\"mso-no-proof:yes\">Personal<\/span> Brand Statement?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">Some people may benefit from a simple website.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>You can create one inexpensively with templated websites such as Squarespace or Weebly.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">Social media is part of digital presence. The primary social media channels <span style=\"mso-no-proof:yes\">are<\/span> Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest <span style=\"mso-no-proof:yes\">and<\/span> LinkedIn.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">Learn how each social media platform functions and keep your brand in mind in all posts, tweets, etc.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Understand the best practices for each.
