Does Higher Cost Mean It\u2019s Better?<\/span><\/h1>\n

It\u2019s an old saying\u2026 one I heard my parents use often.\u00a0 And I freely admit that I\u2019ve said it a few times myself.<\/span><\/p>\n

You get what you pay for!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

What does this phrase mean?\u00a0 The implication is that<\/span>\u00a0cost equals quality<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 If a thing or a service is inexpensive then the quality is less than a comparable item of higher cost.\u00a0 And there is certainly truth to this saying for many things.\u00a0 For example, a $100 desk is likely made of particle board with paper \u201cwoodgrain\u201d glued on it where a $1000 desk may be made of solid cherry or oak.\u00a0 The finish and fit of the components in the cheaper desk are not as polished and precise.\u00a0 Clearly, the higher cost item in this case is also higher quality.<\/span><\/p>\n

Equating cost to quality in manufactured items is valid most of the time.\u00a0 Exceptions tend to be when brand recognition or celebrity association inflate the cost beyond the actual difference in quality which, let\u2019s face it, happens way more than it should in our \u201cfollow the cultural zeitgeist\u201d world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another valid use of \u201cyou get what you pay for\u201d is service.\u00a0 You know what I mean.\u00a0 Go hire someone to paint your house at a rate substantially lower than the industry norm and you will very likely get an inferior result.\u00a0 The painter is probably inexperienced, inept, or both and will likely cut corners in order to make the job profitable.\u00a0 Services are an easy win for \u201cyou get what you for\u201d since\u00a0<\/span>time = money<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and it normally takes longer to do a good job than a poor one.<\/span><\/p>\n

So we can all agree on the rationale and validity of this phrase.\u00a0 But does it hold up for software and online services?\u00a0 No! Let me say that\u00a0<\/span>again with more emphasis\u2026 NO!!\u00a0<\/i><\/b>There are entirely too many instances where free or low-cost tools and services perform as well or better than their more expensive counterparts.\u00a0 Don\u2019t believe me?\u00a0 Let\u2019s look at a few examples.<\/span><\/p>\n
